My Fourth Year As A Top 2% Scientist

My fourth year as a top 2% scientist

The August 2024 data-update for “Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators” has just been released.

I am glad to see my name (representing Delft University of Technology, this time) in the career-long list for the third year in a row, and in the single-year list for the fourth year in a row. In the latter category, I am now in the top 1%. You can find me under “civil engineering” and “building & construction”.

In the career-wide list I rank 700th out of 57831 civil engineering researchers, and in the annual list I am on the 345th place out of 57831 – placing me in the top 1.2% and 0.6% in my field, respectively.

Certainly, there are aspects of the methodology of the ranking that can be criticized, and looking at publications and impact is a limited proxy of how we advance the state-of-the-art, and, ultimately, make this world a better place.

The ranking also shows painful inequalities in science between countries, and the underrepresentation of women. For example: Ecuador, this year, does not have a single female scientist listed. We have work to do here.

Yet, at the same time, I am quite proud of making it to the list, again. After all, it is a nice recognition, and confirmation of efforts 😊.
